Spinning my own yarn has always intrigued me. It seems like a natural progression from knitting and dyeing already spun yarn. Last week, I ordered a spinning starter kit from Etsy because it seemed like the easiest way to jump right in.
Maybe it's just me, but spinning seems really intimidating. Like how am I going to turn this giant chunk of fiber into something useable? I watched a few YouTube videos and it didn't look that hard, so I decided to go for it. The general technique isn't too difficult, but I definitely had some issues with consistency. Towards the end of my first ounce of fiber, I was starting to really get the hang of it. Luckily, I have two more ounces to practice on before I order any meaningful quantities.
I'm really proud of the fact that I did it, but I know I still have a ton to learn. Spinning ain't easy.
And just for giggles, there's this:

My mom and I always joke that people give us weird looks when we knit in public. So she made me promise not to spin in public, unless I was at a spinning event or at my LYS. I promise not to break out the drop spindle in the waiting room at the doctor's office. Promise.
Despite avidly knitting, spinning had never ever occured to me. Now I'm intrigued...
ReplyDeleteI had a lot of fun and definitely see myself taking it up as a suplemental hobby to knitting. I know it's not for everyone though!
